Oyster works well for me. I use underground, over ground and bus but it caps the fare at 3.50, if I did not have Oyster it would be extortionate.

Not sure, depends how much you are using the trains and buses and at what times. A cheap day pass might be better if you are not starting before 9.30 am. But you don't have to register them. You can just buy one and put money on it. The unused money doesn't expire so you can always use it when you come back.

Things have changed so much since I was last in London. I really feel like a foreign tourist. I 'm not likely to be using the trains and busse before 9:30. Can you use the day pass to get to Heathrow ?
