Sleepover on Elk Island

by miramaze @ Wednesday, 09. Jul, 2008 - 23:55:56

Two days away can seem like a week. This morning , I wasn't sure what day it was. I turned up for my physiotherapy appointment with Fredrik only to find his door closed and the rest of the clinic and gym empty. Odd. Being a good girl , I started cycling to warm up and then exercises before knocking on F's door. It was Wednesday, I did have the right time and Fredrik was running late. End of confusion:))

Anyway, I've been catching up with comments and about 12 private posts until now plus a backlog of emails. So , this is what's happened since my last post. ( Accountability  :)) )

Left home around noon on Monday for Lena's island and the GJLM sleepover  It's not only Lena's island, she shares it with half a dozen neighbours. Elk Island , accessible only by boat. Arghhhhh  or plane.

Vi. Lena's 21 year old daughter joined us 4 Wise Women , Crones and made us feel ever so special and wise. It is a rare thing to be appreciated by an intelligent young being, who seems to be well ahead of her years.

What can I say about these 2 days ? Time ceases to exist when the 4 of us meet. It is an intense time , lots of talking, listening , laughing , eating and drinking until 2 a.m. and then starting again after a hearty and leisurely breakfast.

Around midnight we all listened to a " sommar " talk on the radio. " Sommar " is a Swedish tradition. Every summer for about 12 weeks , usually a well known person is chosen to speak on any topic that they choose to fill 80 minutes on the air with talk and music.

This time it was an unusual 53 year old priest, Olle Carlsson , author of the book " Christianity for Atheists " who in in 1997 started turning Allhelgonakyrkan in Stockholm, into Sweden's most popular and well attended church, always packed and very mixed congregation.

Olle himself said he had tried to be an atheist and battled with alcoholism and nearly losing everything before he found himself. He spoke simply and sincerely. The music played included Bob Dylan and Bob Marley and lead to each of us sharing what we would talk about if we were chosen to be " Sommar Speakers ".

This is a good spot for consulting The Goddess and inspired listening to the " Sommar" speaker, the priest from Allhelgona .... what's his name ....Olle Carlson

A glimpse of the Goddess.

It's actually part of the Baltic Sea. There are thousands of islands off the coast that make up the Stockholm Archipelago. :)

Did you come up with this?

They are gorgeous little Islands and it is fun to go on the ferry.

Lots of wealthy city folk have a seaside home there and lots of Young people go out at the weekend to visit their Nans. So there is a veritable souk on the boat with people buying pressies for family and the usual tea and pretzel sellers and the tamarind juice man.

That's a great link , Thanks :)

"The group of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara is known as the Princes' Islands and is only an hour away from the city. "

Little gems worth exploring further

I've never had tamarind juice - I've seen it recipes and wondered.

That takes me back to my cruise through that archipelago, and it still looks like a Bergman film!

Lovely times, to be treasured for life.

Bergman did bring these places to the attention of the world didn't he?

When where you there Tom ?

Yes, times to be treasured. And to think that on Monday I actually considered not going as it was so wet and cold !

That looks a delightful place for a gathering. I like the idea of Sommar. What would be your subject?

I would speak about " Pidge-Zen " The Zen of Pigeons and about synchronicity and outer worlds connected with inner worlds ; how when something unexpected happens like Pidges building their nest on your balcony you have a choice or choices what to do ,what to think , how to react. If this happening were a dream , what would it mean ? How would I interpret it ? How does it relate to my waking life ?

Their arrival has raised questions of symbiosis. Also existential questions about the right to exist. It's been a wonderful opportunity to observe and study these feathered friends and to experience a relationship with them . Macro and micro . This also sort of relates to the summer course that I will be taking in Canterbury
